The three roomates from the Model problem became fast friends. Their senior year, the father of one of
them offered them a wonderful opportunity: 2 years in a 3-bedroom house for only $1200 per month.
They took a tour of the house and agreed that it was wonderful — there was even a swimming pool
outside and a billard table in the study! The owner met them at the house and offered the following deal:
if one of the bedrooms were kept empty for when his brother was in town (an average of 8 days each
month, but 10 days per month during the summer months), the others would not be charged for those
days, thus they would end up with a larger house and more room for less cost! The friends were excited
and agreed immediately. Should they have?

Reflecting on and appreciating your learning
1. When are we pushed to strengthen or expand our mathematical skills when it comes to problem
solving?
2. Which four specific learning skills support steps 6, 7 or 8 in the Problem Solving Methodology (from
the set of learning skills identified as central to the activities in this text)?
3. The validation process is the focus of an upcoming activity. What have you already learned of the
role of validation in quantitative reasoning and problem solving?
