July 6 - 8, 2009
By
participating in this event you will:
-
See education as a key set of processes and understand how
these processes of learning (using different learning
theories), teaching (facilitation of learning), mentoring
(facilitation of growth), curriculum design, and
assessment all integrate to produce faculty, staff, and
student growth and development.
-
Adapt at least five new learning tools or techniques into
current faculty and staff practices, based upon current
research on learning and growth related to mentoring.
-
Learn the difference between assessment and evaluation and
how to improve assessment systems to improve the
effectiveness of mentoring.
-
Gain assessment skills and learn how to incorporate
self-assessment techniques to help mentees develop
meta-cognitive skills.
-
Learn the difference between managing and mentoring; and
increase your desire to do more mentoring of peers, which
includes motivating them based upon their learning plan
and special learning needs and styles.
The Mentoring workshop is an interactive
learning environment where educators experience the role of mentee and mentor in
an active learning environment that models a growth culture using structured
self-reflection (self-assessment). Participants gain many tools and techniques
for improving a mentee’s learning skills, applying a mentoring process,
designing specific experiences for increasing mentee success, and strengthening
abilities to improve assessment processes in one’s self and in a mentee.
Faculty, advisors, and administrators explore personal educational philosophies,
analyze their own approaches to help others grow, and share their ideas with
peers to obtain feedback. Participants gain personal growth in learning skills
that help them to improve institutional learning-outcomes through mentoring.
Participants leave with an increased willingness to take on new challenges in
mentoring.
